1. Trail Difficulty & Terrain Profile
The "Bukit Penyesalan" Parallel: Local mountain guides note that the sharp, steep incline of Bukit Gedong heavily resembles the punishing terrain of Bukit Penyesalan (The Regret Hills) on the main Mount Rinjani summit track. It features steep inclines that test endurance.
Mixed Ecosystem: The lower half of the mountain leads hikers through dense, highly sheltered, mossy tropical forest canopy before breaking into open volcanic savanna grasslands near the upper ridges.
Hiking Duration: The ascent starting from the base elevation of 1,500 mdpl takes roughly 2 to 3 hours to reach the summit. A standard round-trip tektok (same-day hike) averages 4 to 5 hours
2. Post-by-Post Trekking Breakdown
The official route managed by the Rinjani National Park authority is clearly signposted and split into distinct checkpoints:
Basecamp to Pos 1: An easy introductory walk leading directly into a lush forest ecosystem. Pos 1 features an inner-forest clearing often used for rest.
Pos 1 to Pos 2 (Gerbang Ratu - 1,820 mdpl): The trail begins to tilt significantly upward through heavily rooted forest terrain.
Pos 2 to Pos 3 (2,020 mdpl): A demanding 1 to 2-hour push over steep dirt tracks as the tree canopy thins out into highland grasses.
Pos 3 to Puncak (Summit - 2,200 mdpl): A final 1-hour push up a sandy, exposed ridge line to reach the summit campsite.
3. Key Highlights & Standout Views
Front-Row Seat to Rinjani: Because of its high altitude and geographic positioning, the true summit looks directly across at the monolithic eastern wall of Mount Rinjani.
The Sea of Clouds: Trekkers who camp overnight on the summit ridges are treated to an intense, early-morning cloud inversion layer that makes the peak feel like an island floating on white fog.
Rinjani Off-Season Alternative: Because it is an independent peak with well-marked trails, it functions as one of the premier alternative trekking destinations when Mount Rinjani's main summit tracks are closed for seasonal rehabilitation.
